The leading thesis · Mitohormesis

3,000+ studies.
One leading thesis.

Molecular hydrogen is one of the most researched wellness molecules there is. This is the leading explanation of how it works, told in one scroll: from your body into a single cell.

How hydrogen works

You are 37 trillion cells.

Hydrogen is the smallest molecule in the universe. To see what it does, we have to go very small too.

Scroll to go inside
01 · The body

Every one of them runs on energy.

Your heart, your muscles, your brain. Every beat and every thought is paid for, cell by cell.

02 · The cell

Inside every cell, a power grid.

Each cell makes its own energy, all day, every day. That is where hydrogen does its work.

03 · Mitochondria

In every cell, you have mitochondria.

Hundreds of tiny power plants that turn food and oxygen into the energy your cell runs on. They also decide how well the cell copes with stress.

04 · The nudge

Hydrogen gives them a tiny nudge.

It is small enough to slip through every membrane and reach the power plants. There it acts as a signal: a small, harmless push, not a fuel.

05 · Mitohormesis

Like after a workout, the cell answers.

It switches on its own protection and repair, and ends up stronger than before. Scientists call this mitohormesis. It's the leading explanation of how hydrogen works.

06 · The domino effect

A stronger cell leads to a positive domino effect.

Once the cell has responded, the effect carries on. Its own defences switch on, which studies have linked to less oxidative stress and calmer inflammation signals. Not every study finds every step.

And it starts here

With a glass of hydrogen water.

The two ideas, in plain words

A workout for your cells. Then a domino effect.

Nobody fully understood how hydrogen works for twenty years, a bit like paracetamol, which was used for a century before anyone could explain it. In late 2025 researchers identified the first molecular target. Here is the thesis that came out of it.

Idea 1 · Mitohormesis

Hydrogen works like a workout for your cells.

  1. 1
    A tiny nudge

Hydrogen reaches the power plants inside your cells and gives them a small, harmless nudge.

  2. 2
    Your cells respond

Like after a workout, they answer by switching on their own protection and repair.

  3. 3
    Stronger than before

The nudge passes. The stronger defences stay. That's why the effects last longer than the hydrogen itself.

Idea 2 · The domino effect

A stronger cell sets off a domino effect.

  1. Stronger cellsthe starting point
  2. Stronger antioxidant defencesthe body's own shield
  3. Less oxidative stressless wear and tear
  4. Calmer inflammationfewer alarm signals
  5. Cleaner energypower plants that run better
  6. Faster recoveryready again sooner

What researchers have observed across cell, animal and human studies. Not every study finds every effect.

The old ideaHydrogen as an antioxidant

It mops up the most harmful free radicals directly. Simple, but it doesn't fully add up: hydrogen reacts with almost nothing at the levels you get, and it's gone within an hour while its effects last longer.

The leading thesis nowHydrogen as a signal

It trains your cells to protect themselves. In 2025 researchers found where it happens: a protein in the cell’s power plants called the Rieske protein (Negishi et al., Redox Biology, 2025). Other groups are now testing it, and not everyone agrees yet.
